Event Name: When Words Rhyme

Objective:

• To conduct a poetry competition amongst the students and to test their storytelling skills.

Outcome:The participants found themselves pondering about the story they wished to tell, and consequently created a world woven with pretty words and narrated with their own, original voice.

BRIEF REPORT:

Sahitya, Literature Club has organised “When Words Rhyme” competition on 1st April, 2023, Saturday. The competition consisted of five participants from BBA batch 2022-25. All of them were given a paper to write their poems on in the given time frame, which was 40 minutes. The theme was kept open, as well as there were no language barriers; one participant wrote shayari in “Hinglish,” that is, Hindi words written in English. In fact, in order to help the flow of creativity and in a move to inspire creativity, three random words – generated using Google’s random words generator – were dictated. These were “Pyaar,” “Karta,” and “Kehna.” Loosely translated, in English these words are “Love,” “To do,” and “Speaking.”
Spurred on by these optional inspiring words as well as their own imagination, the participants went on to write wildly different poems. A poem about insecurities, a poem about heartbreak, a poem about the warring feelings of a Queen post-war, a poem about being in love, and a poem about the beauty of poems – the worlds created within these showcase the talent of the students, of how they can create something out of nothing but their own thoughts, their own mind. It is truly said by Rita Dove, “Poetry is language at its most distilled and most powerful.”
All of the poets were winners in their own right, however, in a competition only few win prizes. In this competition, Sahitya thanks Dr. Syed Masroor Hassan profusely for agreeing to be the judge and declaring the two winners based solely on their skills to weave a new world with their words. The winners of the competition are Anantha (1st prize) and Shreya (2nd prize).
