Description:
On behalf of I Gift Life, we conducted an outreach event at Unique English Medium School to engage students in learning about health and organ donation. The goal was to educate students from classes 1-10 on maintaining a healthy lifestyle and creating awareness about organ donation in the older classes. The event was structured in two sessions, tailored to suit the different age groups.
Session 1: Healthy Lifestyle Awareness (Classes 1-6)
The first session was aimed at the younger students, from classes 1 to 6, focusing on promoting the importance of a healthy lifestyle. We designed the session to be interactive, engaging, and easy to understand for the children.
Key Points Covered:
• Healthy Eating: We explained the benefits of eating nutritious food, including fruits, vegetables, and the importance of a balanced diet. The concept of “Eat the Rainbow” was introduced, where we encouraged children to eat a variety of colorful fruits and vegetables.
• Exercise and Play: We stressed the importance of regular physical activity and exercise. Fun activities like stretching exercises and interactive games were conducted to get the children moving and excited about fitness.
• Good Hygiene: Simple habits like washing hands, brushing teeth, and keeping themselves clean were emphasized. We taught them about the importance of cleanliness in preventing diseases.
• Mental Health: Age-appropriate discussions about positive thinking, kindness, and managing emotions were included. We encouraged the children to talk to their teachers or parents if they ever feel sad or upset.
Activity Highlights:
• Healthy Habits Chart: We distributed a “Healthy Habits” chart for the children to take home, where they can track their daily habits, like how much water they drink, how much time they spend playing outside, and the types of food they eat.
• Interactive Q&A: After each topic, we asked questions and gave small prizes for participation, making it a fun and interactive session.
• Fun games: we made the kids play fun games like Pictionary with only healthy habits and reg light green light but with healthy food names and also a few fu physical activities
Session 2: Organ Donation Awareness (Classes 7-10)
The second session targeted the older students, from classes 7 to 10, with a focus on the significance of organ donation, while also reinforcing the importance of a healthy lifestyle. The conversation was more informative and detailed, addressing their level of understanding.
Key Points Covered:
• What is Organ Donation? We began by explaining what organ donation is, how it works, and how one person’s decision to donate can save multiple lives. We used simple diagrams to show how organs like kidneys, the heart, and liver can be donated.
• Myths vs. Facts: We address common myths and misconceptions surrounding organ donation. By providing clear facts, we aimed to dispel any fears or confusion the students might have had. For instance, we talked about how organ donation is possible after brain death and how it doesn’t affect funeral rites.
• Importance of Organ Donation: The students learned about the high demand for organ donations in the country and how many people are on waiting lists for organ transplants. We emphasized how each student has the power to make a difference, either by registering as a future donor or by spreading awareness within their families.
Activity Highlights:
• Testimonial Sharing: We shared inspiring stories of organ recipients and donors, allowing the students to hear firsthand how organ donation has impacted lives. This made the concept more relatable and emotionally powerful for them.
• Group Discussion: Towards the end, students were encouraged to ask questions and share their thoughts in a group discussion. It was heartening to see how well they responded to the message, with many expressing a newfound understanding of the subject.
• Quiz: fun quizzes were conducted by end of each session to test their knowledge and understanding of organ donation
Conclusion:
The event at Unique English Medium School was a resounding success, with enthusiastic participation from the students across both sessions. By educating the younger children on healthy lifestyle choices and the older students on the life-saving potential of organ donation, we were able to foster awareness and encourage positive, informed actions.
We left the school hopeful that these young students will carry forward the message, spreading awareness to their families and communities, and contributing to a healthier, more compassionate society.
This outreach initiative by I Gift Life served not only to educate but also to inspire students to make thoughtful choices about their health and consider the profound impact of organ donation.
Learning outcomes:
1. Time management:
Managing the time while giving the same level of importance to the academics was challenging as the pressure was from both the sides academically and from the NGO as well. It took us some time to figure out how to manage our schedules but once we figured out how to manage our timings and understood how the prioritization was to be done, we worked well and much more effectively.
2. Teamwork:
We as students understood how important teamwork is and how to work together for better productivity and output. We also understood how important it is for all of us to be on the same page with respect to our decisions. The importance of sharing the work with everyone and not taking up the entire burden upon oneself that we learned from the project is something that we will take forward in our lives.
